James Michael Lifgren “Whitey” was born on January 25, 1946. Surrounded by his loved ones Jim passed away, at the age of 68, at 8:50 am June 29, 2014 at United Hospital.
In his younger years Jim was known for his outstanding athletic ability, as co-captain of his basketball team he made All-Conference multiple years for basketball and also made All-Conference for football. He went on to play football at Winona State University however he badly re-injured his knees and he could no longer play on the team. Although that was the case it did not stop him from playing for fun and teaching his children all about sports growing up. He was an AMAZING father who took time to teach his children values, morals, and of course athletics. His passions were sports, building things with his hands, and cooking. Recipes were not his thing though, it was all in his head and he was known for making a delicious meal. Many people knew him as “Whitey“, a name he received growing up for his “blonde almost white curly hair”. He had plans to spend a good amount of time in Kauai this Fall over his daughters 30th Birthday, something he was really looking forward to and now will be there in spirit.
We will all miss Whitey so much for his compassion for others, selflessness and most importantly his sarcastic comments.
Jim is survived by his son Michael Steven Lifgren, of Shafer, MN; daughter Ashley Marie Lifgren of Kapaa, Hawaii and their mother Mary Bailey of Lindstrom, MN; brother Charles (Linda) Lifgren; sisters Nancy Anderson, Jean Pearson, Mary Ann Lovato and many other family members, friends, and a loving community. Preceeded in death by his father Roy Lifgren, mother Astrid Lifgren, brother Robert Lifgren, and sister Virginia Luger.
A Memorial service and Luncheon will be held at Chisago City Community Center on Saturday July 12 from 12 (noon) - 4 pm. Please bring your smile (tears are ok too) and a memory to share about Whitey if you wish.
