Charles Elliot Clayton Benson 84, passed away at the Margaret S. Parmly Residence of Ecumen LifePointes in Chisago City, MN Tuesday, July 16, 2013. Charles was born on September 7, 1928 in Lindstrom, MN to A. Vivian and Esther (Nelson) Benson, the sixth of seven children. When speaking of his childhood, many of his memories involved him and his siblings helping to provide for the family. He would fondly reminisce about fishing with makeshift fishing gear, trapping, and squirrel hunting at a very young age. Those early childhood work ethics continued to be his personal agenda throughout his life.
He was known by many for his hard work and determination. He attended Lindstrom Center City (“Chi Hi ”) High School. At age 17, he joined the Navy (WWII). While training in San Diego, CA and Alaska, he served as a frogman a (UDT) Underwater Demolition Team. He was honorably discharged in 1948. Returning to Lindstrom he worked as a carpenter, and persued a career in Golden Glove Boxing. He drove to Minneapolis (90 miles round trip), three nights a week for training and amateur card matches. His trainer was quoted as saying he was one of his most conscientious pupils. On July 1, 1950, Charles married Carole Ruthie Olson in a beautiful ceremony at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Almelund, MN. Carole passed away in June 2012, after almost 62 years of marriage. Charles and Carole bought the Dew Drop Inn Resort on South Center Lake in Center City, MN one week before their marriage.
They took great pride in providing a clean and well maintained business for their customers to enjoy. Many faithful patrons became close friends during their 46 years of service. During the winter months, Charles worked as a millwright/carpenter/welder. Having completed well over 50 yrs of continuous membership, he was granted "Life Membership" in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America. After retirement, Charles and Carole built their "dream home" on South Center Lake. His happiest times were when he was working his projects, which were always done to perfection. Charlie always loved fishing, hunting, going to auctions and garage sales to find "treasures", dancing to the good old Scandinavian tunes, and spending time with his family. In the 1970s, they enjoyed snowmobiling and were among the founding chapter members of the Wild River Snowmobile Club.
