Chisago Lakes District getting shares in Community Solar Garden at Eichten's
The Chisago Lakes School District approved a motion that will obtain four kilowatts of solar energy from Eichten’s Community Solar Garden.
The move will save the district millions of dollars over the 25 year agreement at no extra cost the board was told.

MS speech team wins awards
North Branch Area Middle School's speech team had a very successful season, delivering 29 superior-rated performances this year. The season ended last Thursday, February 5 with the middle school Two Rivers Conference meet in Rush City. As a rewarding ending to a solid season, three of the team members left with conference titles. Saueressig to represent the state in Voice of Democracy contest
Ali Saueressig, a senior at Chisago Lakes High School, has earned the opportunity to represent the state of Minnesota at the national Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Scholarship competition in Washington, D.C.   The Voice of Democracy competition, sponsored by the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary, is designed to give high school students the opportunity to voice their opinions on their responsibility to our country and convey their thoughts to all America.

CL Middle School news
Please join us March 23, 2015 for “Parent University”-Raising Kids with Love, Learning & Joy!  Come and join us from 6 pm-8 pm at the PAC.  Dr. Timothy Johnson and Michael Anderson will speak from 6 pm-7 pm about raising kids in ways that will reduce shame, foster maturity and help them to become life-ready adults.  Breakout sessions will follow the main speakers from 7:15 pm-8 pm.  Breakout sessions will include the following topics:  Techno Parenting, Checklist to Adulthood, Gifted and Talented, Preparing for College, and digital Citizenship.  This opportunity is free and is sponsored by the Chisago Lakes Parent Teacher Organization, Taylors Falls Parents for Education and Chisago Lakes Community Education.

Doohen wins NBAMS spelling bee!
North Branch Area Middle School, 21 finalists in grades 5-8 participated in the second annual Spelling Bee Thursday, Jan. 29.  Students made it through 15 rounds of challenging words.  The school champion is Noah Doohen, 7th grade, who will move on to the Regional Spelling Bee on Feb. 12 at Resource Training and Solutions in Sartell. The runner -up is 5th grader Kobe Yang.  Pictured (l to r): Kobe Yang and Noah Doohen.

North Branch facilities review task force sends priority projects to board
The community task force working on analyzing North Branch School District facilities’ needs and assigning the projects some sort of priority ranking finished their chore last week.  

North Branch School Board will review the findings in a special work session-- February 26, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the North Branch Area Public Schools Education Center (old primary school.)

Schmidt brothers impressive in Spelling Bee
Chisago Lakes Area Schools held their annual district spelling bee contest January 26.  There were 20 students from 5th, 6th and 7th grades who participated.  The event took place at the Performing Arts Center.  It took 16 rounds to determine a winner.  Ironically, it was two brothers Alex and Jonah Schmidt competing in the final rounds.  In the end, younger brother Jonah was  pronounced the winner.  Lars Heinecke took third place.

Special Education in schools, times have changed
Special Education in the United States has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Special Education students or students with disabilities, used to receive different instruction by different teachers, in different spaces than the general education population received.

CL School Board okays BYOD for Fall 2015, team trapshooting possible
The Chisago Lakes School Board met January 8 and all members were present so the council quickly approved the minutes from the previous meeting.  In open forum, Jacque Smallman addressed the board.  Smallman was there to speak about the current Bring Your Own Device  program the eighth grade is using.   Smallman asked the council to please be careful with the language used when explaining the voluntary/optional options for the BYOD program.  Smallman asked them to clearly word the policy for students and parents so as to not discriminate against anyone.

NBAHS Assistant Principal to help build school in Domincan Republic
Glen Stevens, Assistant Principal at North Branch Area High School, and member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), will help build a school in the Dominican Republic Jan. 26 – Feb. 3. The school will be built for the children and families in a small, mountainous farming community, through a program called LifeTouch Memory Mission.

Local NHS volunteers collect toys and food
Local National Honor Society students volunteered to help Rotary and Chisago City firefighters in the annual mobile collection, where Santa rides aboard the flatbed trailer welcoming young visitors while collecting toys and food items.  The Chisago Lakes High School Honor Society participants,  pictured with the collected items at the fire hall, are: Brooke Mueller, Lauryn Delzer, Lauren Peltier, Hannah Nordby and Abbi Morgan.

North Branch School Board adopts levy for next year
North Branch School Board voted 4-2 to adopt the levy that will begin to be collected in May 2015, with members Jay Falk and Randy Westby opposed.  The two did not put their names on the November ballot and won’t be returning to the Board in 2015.

One last BYOD update before the board decides on the program's future
The Chisago Lakes School Board got one final update from Middle School Principal Jodi Otte on the state of the Bring Your Own Device program.

This update included results from a parent survey that was e-mailed to 258 parents of middle school students.

Local educators honored as 2014 TIES 'Exceptional Teachers'
Kellee  Knutson  and Kara  Odegaard  of Chisago Lakes School District, Rachelle  Weinand and Laura  Rothe of North Branch School District and Eric  Telander of Rush City Schools will be recognized as TIES Exceptional Teachers at the 2014 Education Technology Conference at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency, December 9. They are among 91 teachers from 48 districts.
