9/26/2013 3:55:00 PM Girl scouts school project provided summer harvest; was huge success
Girl Scout Troop 55365 from Taylors Falls Elementary built and planted a garden at the school, with permission from administration.
With the girls is Master Gardener, Mark Stewart who taught an enrichment class on square foot raised bed gardens and supervised the building of the TF garden with the girls. The design of the garden was supposed to be all 4ft x 4ft beds, but the girls and their helpers designed this garden a little bit different. When you walk up to it, it is kind of hard to see, but from the outdoor classroom, however, you can see the beds are in the shape of T. F. E. Donations for this project came from St. Croix Falls Wal-Mart (for much of the funding), Lisa Thibodeau, the Solid Waste Administrator from Chisago County for the rain barrel; Mark Pliscott and family for the lumber; Kyle Johnson from Northern Gutter for the rain gutter, down spout and its installation; Seed Savers out of Decorah, Iowa for donating heritage seeds (the girls visited there in the summer of 2012); Tim Burton along with Shirley Swanson and her crew at TF for giving us access to the garden and getting us in touch with people in our area to help us out… and finally, Jerry Vitalis for giving direction, advice and many plants and seeds. Jerry was such a huge help during the growing season. Many times he was asked for his opinion and advice on things from bugs to when we do harvest.
To all of you, the girls say Thank You! Another huge thank you to Rich Frankson of Shafer, Dan and Lori Lundgren of Amery teacher Mr. Romportl and his daughter, Daneka, and all the girls and parents who carried and mixed the soil, pounded every nail and measured every board on construction day. This project was an amazing learning experience for the girls and they have earned their Bronze Award. The garden produced over 50 pounds of vegetables that were all donated to Family Pathways in Lindstrom throughout the summer. This garden continues to teach children at school as well.
