District looking into all day, every day K
By JEFF NORTON

The Chisago Lakes school board quickly began putting together a plan for a possible all day, every day kindergarten at the regular school board meeting on Thursday, Dec. 13. Forest Lake School Board adopted all day, every day kindergarten in early December so Chisago Lakes figures it’s something they may need to offer to not lose enrollment. The December 13 meeting was the first time all day, every day K was brought up, and superintendent Mike McLoughlin expects a decision to be made by the January 15 meeting. “We have to make a decision on it,” he said. The drawback is that it’s going to cost the district money. They aren’t funded for all day, every day kindergarten at this point, but McLoughlin did say they are hopeful the legislature will change that soon. He figured the cost of the program would be between $200-250,000, but he also said that was a very tentative number. “We may need to draw down some fund balance to get it started,” McLoughlin said. Board member Noel Stensrud attended her last meeting after nine years on the board. Stensrud did not file for re-election this November. New board member Brenda Carlson will be taking her spot. Carlson has been at meetings since she was elected. In Stensrud’s letter to the board, she said, “It is bittersweet to leave the Chisago Lakes School Board. It was exciting to improve our curriculum, update our athletic facilities, hire new administrators and replace temporary classrooms. I will not miss cutting the budget. Every year that has been painful and I hope the future holds a better solution to financing public schools.” The next school board meeting will be on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The normal meetings are on Thursdays, but because the Minnesota School Board Association is to meet on Thursday, they moved the meeting to Tuesday.
