BY DANI STRENKE
Many Chisago Lakes students will be visiting a traveling memorial to fallen Vietnam War soldiers in September.
The Wall That Heals is a half-scale replica of the original Wall in Washington, D.C. The replica is complete with the more than 58,000 names of those killed or missing in action.
It will be in Lindstrom Sept. 10-13 on the junior varsity baseball field at Chisago Lakes High School.
Chisago Lakes principals and teachers are formulating plans to bring students to visit the memorial and traveling museum, but the timing of the event coinciding with the first week of school was a bit challenging, they said.
Lakeside Principal Warren Retzlaff said he talked with the school's fifth grade teachers, and all fifth graders will go to the memorial Thursday, Sept. 10. Because of the limited space, classes will be brought to the memorial two at a time, Retzlaff explained.
Although the district's fifth grade curriculum focuses on Minnesota history, Retzlaff said he felt the event was appropriate for the age group.
"It's a unique opportunity we have, and I know I look forward to seeing it," Retzlaff said.
He hopes parents will visit with their children, even if the kids see it through school.
Taylors Falls Elementary Principal Joe Thimm said the timing made it difficult to take the school's fifth grade classes to visit the memorial. The school will be sending home information about the memorial, encouraging families to visit together.
Chisago Lakes Middle School Associate Principal Jodi Otte said the school's social studies department worked out a schedule to take two classes of seventh grade American Studies students and two classes of eighth grade 20th Century students to visit the memorial Thursday, Sept. 10.
"That was about all the time slots we had for students over there," Otte said.
Chisago Lakes High School social studies teachers will also be busy bringing students out to the field, but scheduling has not been finalized. Teacher Rick Bouwens said the department would be looking at the schedule during teacher workshops this week.
