Chisago Lakes stays warm at indoor meet
The Wildcat track team opened the 2016 season with a trip to St. Michael Albertville last Tuesday, April 5 for an indoor quadrangular that included the hosts, along with St. Francis and Buffalo.  The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ teams both finished a distant third.

The St. Michael-Albertville Knights rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three times on their way to a 4-2 win over the Wildcats last Tuesday, April 19 at St. Michael.

Chisago Lakes track getting mixed results early in season

It was a cold day last Tuesday, April 12, when the Wildcats hosted a quadrangular with North Branch, Princeton and Hermantown.
 
Girls
The Chisago Lakes girls won their meet over North Branch by seven points.  North Branch didn’t run any relays and were missing some kids.  Izzy Hindt had a great day with firsts in the 200, 400 and 4-by 400.  Other members of the four by 400 relay team were Karly Hennen, Sally Nelson and Leah Higgins.  Hennen also won the 100 meter dash.  The four by 100 and four by 800 teams won as well.  Julia Nelson, Morgan Huberty, Kennedy Phillips and Selina Lee ran the four by 100 and Jess Bartz, Lindsey Craig, Juliette Martin, and Mariah Sistrunk ran the four by 800.  Wildcat head coach Ken Orwoll said,  “I was very impressed with Morgan Huberty's performance in the both hurdle races in such poor weather conditions.  She took second in both.”

Busy schedule hard on 'Cats, 1-4 on the week after NSP
St. Michael-Albertville 7, Chisago Lakes 4
St. Michael Albertville broke a 3-3 tie with pairs of runs in the fifth and sixth innings and went on to beat the Wildcats 7-4 at St. Michael  Tuesday, April 19.  In the second inning, Alison Gajeski squeezed home the first run of the game and Cassie Lynch followed two batters later with a two-run double to put the Wildcats up 3-0.  But the Knights tied it with a single run in the second and two runs in the third.  In the seventh, Brooke Mueller led off with a double.  One out later, Alex Smith singled her in.  But the Knights shut down the Wildcats after that to come away with the win.  Cassie Lynch started for the Wildcats and took the loss.

Wildcats win 3 in a row
St. Francis 9, Chisago Lakes 1
The St. Francis Fighting Saints broke open a scoreless tie with nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to roll over the Wildcats 9-1 last Tuesday, April 12 at St. Francis.  Starting pitcher Tyler Stilp shut out the Fighting Saints for the first five innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out nine.  But in the sixth, Stilp and Trevor Johnson combined to allow nine runs on six hits and two walks.  Two errors and a balk didn’t help things, but seven of the nine runs were earned.

Chisago Lakes wins their first game of the season, a chilly contest again C-I
A cold spring couldn’t keep the Wildcat baseball team bottled up forever.  In the season opener last Thursday, April 7, starter Tyler Stilp pitched four innings of shutout baseball and Gabe Taylor and Henry Trost had two hits apiece to lead the Wildcats to an 8-2 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets.  The game was played at Adolph Larson Field in Cambridge.

Errors cost CL in loss against Jackets
The Wildcat softball team let their season opener against the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets slip through their fingers.  Literally.  Three Wildcat errors led to four Bluejacket runs, helping the Bluejackets to a 6-4 win last Thursday, April 7 at Cambridge-Isanti High School.

North Branch Peewee A team caps unbelievable season with state trip
The 2015-2016 North Branch Peewee A team just finished a truly historic season.

They are the first team ever from North Branch, at any level of hockey, to qualify for a Minnesota State Tournament appearance.  This group of  players, born in the years 2000-2003 have been over-achieving ever since they first started skating together as Mites seven to eight years ago.

After a wildly successful regular season and a few upsets in section finals, the Chisago Lakes boys basketball team found themselves seeded fourth in the state tournament this year and “hosting” a team they had already beaten.

The Chisago Lakes boys swimming and diving team represented themselves well at the state tournament last week, with the highlight being Jacob Carlson’s eighth place finish in diving,  despite battling pneumonia.

Pierce battles back to win third at state, Klick wins with dramatic pin
Wildcat junior Teddy Pierce (138) decisioned fellow junior Isaac Haman of Kasson-Mantorville 7-6 to take third place at last weekend’s state high school wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.  Pierce won his opening round match, lost in the quarterfinals and then won four straight matches in the wrestlebacks to claim the third place trophy.  Junior Adam Klick (220), after trailing throughout most of his opening round match, surprised his opponent and the crowd with a late pin in the third round to win his opening round match.  Klick lost his next two matches and did not place.  Senior Kyle Schoenecker (195), appearing in the tourney for a record-tying sixth year in a row, lost his first round match.  Since Schoenecker’s first round opponent lost his next match, Schoenecker did not get the opportunity to participate in wrestlebacks.  Senior Aaron Sistrunk (132) was pinned in his opening round match and lost his second match by major decision and did not place.  Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon missed most of the tournament due to a short illness, but had now recovered.

Chisago Lakes wins first ever section championship by just three points
There’s close margins, and there’s razor thin margins. And then there’s the amount Chisago Lakes won their first ever section title by last week.

The boys needed every second and every point in their competitions, as they edged second place Grand Rapids by only three points in a meet where 2,193 points were doled out. The Wildcats scored 366 points and the Thunderhawks of Grand Rapids scored 363 points.

Four Chisago Lakes wrestlers punch their ticket to the state meet
Four Chisago Lakes Wildcat wrestlers qualified for the state tournament this weekend at the Xcel Energy Center.  Teddy Pierce (138) and Kyle Schoenecker (195) repeated as section champions.  And Aaron Sistrunk (132) and Adam Klick (220) each finished second in their weight classes.  And for the second year in a row, no North Branch Viking wrestlers qualified for state.  The closest was Jack Anderson (113), who finished third.

Chisago Lakes gets triumphant win over NB, only to lose in semis

If all you saw of last Thursday’s Section 5A playoff quarterfinal boys’ hockey game between the Wildcats and Vikings was a particular two minute stretch of the second period, you saw the sequence that determined the outcome of the game.  Trailing 1-0 at the 7:24 mark, the Wildcats scored three goals in the next two minutes to take a 3-1 lead.  They added another goal later in the period and went on to beat the Vikings 4-1.  The game between the second-seeded Wildcats and the seventh-ranked Vikings was played at Chisago Lakes Arena.  The loss ended the season for the Vikings.  With the win, the Wildcats earned the right to host Monticello in the section semifinals.

North Branch gets first ever win over Chisago Lakes in boys hockey
Nick Fairbanks scored the game’s only goal at 8:20 of the third period to lead the North Branch Vikings to a 1-0 win over the Chisago Lakes Wildcats.  It was the first time the Vikings beat the Wildcats in the history of the rivalry between the two schools.  Brandon Waldo picked up the lone assist on Fairbanks’ goal.  The game was played last Thursday, February 11 at the home arena for both teams – Chisago Lakes Arena.

With both teams eliminated from sections, attention turns to individual tourney
Chisago Lakes High School is hosting the Section 7AA wrestling individual tournament tomorrow and Saturday.  The Wildcats will likely have six wrestlers seeded in the top three of their respective weight classes, while it is uncertain if the North Branch Vikings will have any wrestlers in the top three.  The Wildcats will field wrestlers at all weights except 120, while the Viking contingent will be closer to half a lineup.  Matches get underway at 1 p.m. on Friday and will run to about 7 p.m.  On Saturday, the day will get underway at 11 a.m. and things will wrap up around 5 p.m.

With high hopes of multiple individual state tournament berths and maybe even both teams participating in the state meet, the Chisago Lakes boys and girls alpine ski teams were a little disappointed after their Section 7 championships on Tuesday, February 2 at Giants Ridge in Biwabik.

'Cats peaking at right time, handle Princeton

Jared Konan scored a shorthanded goal for Cambridge-Isanti early in the second period to break a 2-2 tie and the Bluejackets went on to beat the Wildcats 4-2.  The game was played Saturday, January 30 at Chisago Lakes Arena.  Tyler Stilp got the Wildcats off on the right foot in this one, scoring an unassisted goal at 1:30 of the first period for an early 1-0 lead.  The Bluejackets came back with power play goals at 7:47 and 14:37 to go up 2-1.  But Brandon Caudill scored a power play goal with just eight seconds left in the period, assisted by Landon Lushanko and Chasse Heiskala, to tie it up 2-2 after the first period.

Dancers light up Chisago Lakes High School with slick moves
A total of 11 teams were participating as  North Branch and Chisago Lakes jazz and high kick teams went up against competitors in the January 30 section contest,  held at Chisago Lakes High School west gym.  Neither of the local teams finished in the top three (jazz routines for both Vikettes and Lakettes are pictured)   Totino Grace E-Gals won both the Jazz and Kick divisions to advance to the state high school danceteam contest.  Benilde St Margaret took the second places  in jazz and in high kick.  Third place, in Jazz,  went to Duluth Denfeld and Fridley took third place in Kick.

Wildcats win sixth in a row with big comeback against Buffalo

Already in the midst of a small winning streak, the Wildcats kept their positive vibes going throughout last week.

After topping county rival North Branch, the Wildcats took on Lakes Area foe Forest Lake. The two teams don’t meet often, but there is a mutual disdain between the two schools, but Chisago Lakes came away with bragging rights this time.

A few 'Cats just miss out on conference championships in wrestling
Mississippi 8 Conference Wrestling Tournament
Host St. Michael-Albertville, ranked second in Class AAA, dominated last Friday’s Mississippi 8 Conference Wrestling Tournament and easily won the conference championship.  Eight Knight wrestlers finished first in their respective weight classes and a Knight wrestler placed at all 14 weights.  Meanwhile, both the Vikings and the Wildcats fielded limited lineups as they try to get their teams ready for sections starting next week.  The Wildcats send eight wrestlers and four of them placed.  They finished in eighth place out of ten teams, in a cluster with Monticello, Big Lake and Rogers.  The Vikings only place one wrestler, Bailey Adams (285) and finished at the back of the pack in tenth place.

After dropping their county rivalry game to Chisago Lakes, the Vikings hosted the Mayer Lutheran Crusaders for a non-conference tilt and it didn’t go very well for the Vikings.

Despite a bug going around the Chisago Lakes gymnastics team, they scored season highs in both varsity and junior varsity against Buffalo last week, but it wasn’t enough to best the talented Bison.
