Thompson keeps it rolling, wins sixth straight
Although most of the leaderboard had a national flair to it in the 2014 Chisago Lakes Triathlon, one thing remained constant: David Thompson. The St. Paul native won his sixth straight CL Tri, coming in first with a time of 4:03:10, but he only bested the field by a minute this year. Last year, Thompson won the event by almost 12 minutes.

Vikings and 'Cats schedules likely to stay very similar after district alignments announced
Minnesota State High School League schools should no longer have a reason to travel far out of state to find football opponents or play less than an eight-game regular season football schedule. The League Board of Directors today unanimously adopted a plan that places all member schools with football programs into Districts. The members of each district will divide the district into sub-districts, and then create a full schedule for each team. In nearly all cases the placement of schools will not negatively affect traditional rivalries or preferred opponents.

Softball player makes good on target in the Stacy outfield
The Stacy Lions Club had a first...a ballplayer hit a homerun on May 28 and the ball went through an 18-inch hole cutout of an advertising sign, at the Doyle Memorial Stacy Lions ballpark.  The Mike’s Repair and Towing  sign has been at centerfield  for years-- but until Kyle Peck threaded the needle the notion of winning the $100 cash prize was just an urban myth.   Incoming Lions President Bruce Jaworski was almost as excited to hand over the prize money last week as Peck was to claim it.  Peck grew up in Stacy,  lives in Isanti now  and is a fielder for the Running Aces ball team.  He achieved this rare feat using  a “Monsta” bat.  Also pictured left is Mike Olson.    ***  The  Stacy Lions also extend a big thank you to Xccent for its help erecting the new play structure at the ballfields.  Xccent (of Wyoming) was super to work with and we really appreciate the help on site, the Lions stated.  Come out and enjoy the facilities and some great softball games during the major mens and womens softball tourney--  happening at the fields Aug 1-3 during Stacy Days.

Top 11 stories of 2013-14 for CL and NB
Welcome back to the annual top 11 high school sports stories of the 2013-14 season. I decided to officially change it to a list of 11 last year when I just couldn’t figure out only 10. It makes my job a bit easier and gives the readers an extra memory to think back on. Last year’s top spot went to then-junior Thomi Lee. She won the state championship in the 500 yard freestyle, becoming the first swimmer to take first place at state in Chisago Lakes history. This year, there were no state champions among the winners here, but there were a few near-misses and some great moments in competition that really defined what the Chisago County area, and specifically North Branch and Chisago Lakes High Schools are all about. Each season had plenty of highlights, so without further ado, here is the top 11 list for this past school year.

Buboltz finishes in 22nd place for North Branch

Recently, when area golfers have made the state tournament, they struggle mightily at the grandiose meet. Golf is such a mental game, and even the slightest difference in a swing or approach can be the difference between a great day and a miserable day.

When the North Branch track and field team started its season, sending any double digit number of entrants into the state tournament would’ve been a lofty goal.

The Wildcat baseball team went into the Section 7AAA playoffs, the final section playoffs in Pat Collins’ career as a high school head coach, as the number two seed.  They had relied on power, good defense and enough pitching to amass a 14-4 overall record prior to the playoffs, but things came screeching to an abrupt halt a bit too early.

St. Francis scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to give themselves some breathing room and went on to beat the Wildcats 6-2 Tuesday, May 20 at St. Francis. Wildcat outfielder Mark Sontag homered for the fifth time this season, temporarily tying Matt Hasselquist for the team lead. Rival ends NB's softball season
North Branch’s softball team has had tough times this year fielding the ball, but it was the other team’s defense that cost them in the opening round of Section 7AAA. The Vikings, seeded ninth to Grand Rapids’ eight seed, won mostly in part because the Thunderhawks committed five errors on the day that led to eight North Branch runs. It also helped that the North Branch offense cranked out 11 hits, including a 3-for-5 game from Jaci Bossard, and 2-for-4 games from Hannah Hubbard and Mikayla Carlson. Kaylee Lofboom got the win pitching, despite giving up three homeruns to the Thunderhawks.

Lady Vikes fall into cold spell, lose four of five in one week

The Vikings took on conference leading Rogers on Monday, May 12, and they weren’t able to muster any offense to hang with the talented Royals. They only gathered three hits on the night, and that usually won’t cut it against anyone, especially Rogers. The Royals plated seven runs, but only two of them were earned as Kaylee Lofboom’s defense struggled behind her.

Spartans win two matches in a row
The Chisago Lakes Spartans Rugby Club got a shutout win over Minneapolis South last week, winning 24-0. They got two tries from Amanda Shoquist, one from Gabby Randall and one from Anne Goosen. Katelyn Sargeant kicked two conversions for the Spartans’ points. “Our defense was much improved over our last game against North Suburban,” Head Coach Tony Randall said. “We kept their fast fullback from getting the edge, and that was huge.” Randall also noted good performances from Grace Sapp and Marney Schantzen, but really emphasized that it was a team win that everyone took part in. “You could see the light bulbs coming on for some of the new girls,” he said. “They struggled a bit in the North Suburban game, but they are starting to put it together.” Randall said the team is about on pace with last year’s squad and that he’s hoping they can finish strong.

North Branch girls win True Team sectional

For the second year in a row, the North Branch girls track and field team is heading to the True Team state meet, the unofficial team state tournament in Minnesota. Since the end-of-the-year state tournament only features individuals and then accumulates their points to come up with a team championship, the true team allows a whole team to go and awards points all the way through the standings. It helps get a sense of which team is the best, from top to bottom.

Vikes on a three game win streak

After starting the season 1-8, the North Branch baseball team found themselves on a bit of a roll last week, beginning with a big win over Big Lake. With Jacob Kari on the mound, the Vikes figured to be locked in a pitching duel, and it didn’t disappoint through the first five innings. The game was knotted at 1-1 after those five and it looked like it may come down to who had the better bullpen. But, a five-run sixth inning blew the game wide open and sent the Vikings to their first win two weeks.

Wildcats drop two heartbreakers to St. Francis
Emily Hammer’s first inning grand slam in the bottom of the first inning started things off with a bang for the Wildcats when they took on Princeton in the second game of the doubleheader. Princeton answered with a grand slam of their own in the top of the second inning, but the Wildcats responded with ten runs in the bottom of the second inning to blow the game open. Neither team scored after that and the Wildcats won 14-4 in a game shortened to five innings because of the ten-run rule.

Magnuson only Wildcat to win at true team, takes top spot in 1600, 3200
The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ track teams participated in the nine-team Section 5AAA True Team meet Tuesday, May 6 at Cambridge-Isanti High School. The boys finished seventh and the girls finished ninth. Blaine won the boys’ meet and Forest Lake won the girls’ meet. Those teams will represent the section at the state True Team meet. A True Team meet differs from a regular track meet in a few ways. Each school enters exactly three participants in each individual event and one team in each relay event. Also, each athlete may only participate in up to three events, so team depth is important. Every participant who finished the event, from first place to last, earns team points. So, in individual events in a nine-team tournament like this one, first place gets 27 points, second place gets 26, etc. The 27th place participant gets one point.

This incoming freshman class will have a little extra significance for Brogan. Thomi, a senior at Chisago Lakes High School, decided to sign her Letter of Intent to swim at Rutgers also. The choice wasn’t easy for Thomi, who won a state championship in the 500 free in her junior year and broke her sister’s school record this past swim season.
