Spartans win Plate Division title

The Chisago Lakes Spartans rugby team capped their season last weekend with a state championship in the Plate Division, which was previously known as Tier II. After a first round bye, the Spartans had to scratch and claw their way past Faribault in the semi-finals. They went down 12-0 after the first half, and Head Coach Tony Randall basically started prepping for their consolation matches.

Hannah Nordby finishes sixth at state in the 400
At last Saturday’s MSHSL State Meet finals, Wildcat sophomore Hannah Nordby set the Chisago Lakes High School record for the third time in a week in the 400 meter dash, with a time of 57.48 seconds.  She finished sixth overall in the race.  Nordby earned her way into the finals with a run of 57.73 seconds in Friday’s preliminaries, setting a school record that she broke on Saturday.

Vikings sending five individuals and one relay team to state

Norm Nagel’s speciality is pole vaulting. The second year head coach of North Branch’s track and field team, Nagel knew he saw some potential in some younger vaulters last year, but waited until this year to unleash them, and they’ve been effective throughout the season.

Nordby a double qualifier in the 400 and 4x400 relay
Wildcat sophomore Hannah Nordby set a Chisago Lakes High School record of 58.80 seconds in the preliminaries of the 400 meter relay last Wednesday, May 29 at Duluth. In the Saturday, June 1 finals, also held at Duluth, Nordby ran a bit slower, 59.25 seconds. But she won the race and is headed for the MSHSL State Track and Field Meet this Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.

North Branch shocks top-seeded Elk River

The only thing the North Branch baseball team needs this post season is an opportunity and an inning. The Vikings dueled fourth-seeded Anoka in the second round of sections last week, with the Tornadoes as the clear favorite going into the contest.

North Branch earns revenge by ending the 'Cats season
Viking Mike Naggatz’s diving catch  of Wildcat Kellen Reed’s line drive down the third base line with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and Wildcat runners on second and third ended the game and sealed the eighth-seeded Vikings’ 4-2 win over the ninth-seeded Wildcats in the opening round of the Section 7AAA playoffs.  The game was played this past Monday, May 27 at North Branch High School.

CL beats Vikes for third time, ending girls' season

The Wildcats abruptly ended North Branch’s season with a 10-4 victory in the first round of sections. The Vikings struck first in the top of the first inning with one run, but then Chisago Lakes jumped all over NB in the bottom of the first, getting seven hits and a walk in the inning and scoring six runs to go up 6-1.

It was always a tough draw for the Wildcat boys tennis team to have Elk River in the same section as them, but the fact that they made it to face them in the section finals shows the strides they’ve made.

Area golfers kick off Memorial Day sections
Memorial Day always brings about the start of the Section 7AA golf tournament at Hinckley Grand National Golf Course in Hinckley, and despite the constant delays and reschedulings this year, the sections were able to start on time.

SLP fans, player ejected during wild game against Chisago Lakes
The fans got their money’s worth when the Wildcats hosted Spring Lake Park last Thursday, May 16 at Chisago Lakes High School.  They saw 20 runs, 20 hits, five lead changes and three ejections.  Unfortunately, the last lead change saw the Panthers score five runs in the top of the sixth to overcome an 8-7 deficit and beat the Wildcats 12-8.

Wildcats win long-awaited county battle with NB
The Wildcats broke open a close game with five runs in the top of the fourth inning and went on to beat the Vikings 8-2 last Wednesday, May 15.  The game was a home game for the Vikings, but was played at night at Chisago Lakes because of scheduling issues.  It was the second game of the day for the Vikings, who had played at Irondale and won earlier in the afternoon.

Thirty-four teams brave cold conditions for carp tourney

Despite some rain clouds and chilly weather out on the lakes, the fourth annual Chisago Lakes Carp Fishing tourney was a success for anglers and area lakes. There were 579 carp harvested from the lakes, including some gigantic ones.

Vikes drop three North Suburban games in a week

The Vikings struggled against St. Francis from the get go, committing costly errors in the first two innings that led to a quick 7-0 deficit. Starting pitcher Jacob Kari settled down and got through the third and fourth innings unscathed, but the Fighting Saints tacked on two more runs in the fifth before Kari was pulled.

Wildcats close out regular season with win over Jackets
Benilde scored twice in the first inning and slowly pulled away from the Wildcat softball team, eventually winning 9-1 to snap the Wildcats’ four game winning streak.  The game was played Wednesday, May 15 at Chisago Lakes.

CL finishes fifth in NS conference

At last week’s North Suburban Conference Championship meet, sophomore Hannah Nordby won the 400 meter dash and set a new Chisago Lakes High School record in the process with a time of 58.88 seconds. As teams, the Wildcat girls finished in a tie for fifth place with Irondale and the boys finished in seventh place. But several other Wildcat individuals and one relay team had standout performances.

Leuer reflects on her time at North Branch
On  Sunday, May 19, former North Branch Activities Director and Coach Becky Leuer was inducted into the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame.  In her acceptance remarks, Leuer said, "I am honored to be inducted into the MSHSL Hall of Fame.  I am grateful to North Branch for giving me a job right out of college and giving me the support and training needed to be the best teacher, coach, and administrator possible.  I had amazing assistant coaches and student athletes who shared their talent with me and made me look good.”

CL's farewell tour of North Suburban tough at times
Robbinsdale Cooper scored two runs in the top of the first inning and the proved to be all they needed as they shut out the Wildcats 5-0 last Wednesday, May 8 at Chisago Lakes.  The Wildcats managed just four singles for the game.  Wildcats pitchers Kellen Reed, Dylan Magnuson and Colton Mueller combined to strike out 15 batters, and allowed just seven hits, but walked nine.

Ideal conditions don't lead to ideal results for NB golf
The North Branch girls golf team had been battling poor weather conditions all year, and there was hope that was the cause of their slow start. But, with the sun shining and the course dry last week, the Vikings still struggled in their North Suburban Conference meet at Victory Links. “The conditions were the best we’ve seen this season, and still, as a team we didn’t take advantage,” Head Coach Dave Ambers said after the meet.

The Chisago Lakes Spartans rugby club had the brutal task of playing two rugby matches in three games, and they came away with a split record and a couple bumps and bruises, but Head Coach Tony Randall thinks they are better off because of it.

Wildcats winding down on abbreviated track season
Both the Wildcat boys’ and girls’ track team fared well in front of the home crowd in the Section 7AA True Team track meet, featuring all nine section teams. The boys finished second behind Grand Rapids and the girls took third behind first place North Branch and second place Hermantown.

Wild week brings Chisago Lakes to end of the season

After a pair of losses last week dropped the Wildcat record to 2-4, the Wildcats won four straight road games to improve their record to 6-4 on the season.

Golf has been the spring sport most brutalized by this poor weather lately. Even when the rain and snow stopped, the course needed time to dry out, leaving the teams confined to the gym for longer than the other sports.

The Chisago Lakes boys tennis team eased into their season after all the postponements with a sweeping victory over Princeton. The Tigers were without their top two players, the Mayerchek brothers, and that made things pretty simple for the ‘Cats.

Track and field season fully underway outside for Chisago
Two Wildcat girls finished in first place in their events at the season opening track event, the St. Louis Park Invitational.  Senior Abby Forsman won the 800 meter run with a time of 2:33.07 and senior Hannah Trandahl won the long jump with a leap of 15’4”.
