Chisago Lakes-North Branch rivalry renewed tonight with Vikings on a roll
North Branch 4, Highland Park 2
Having played two games in the previous three days, a tired bunch of Viking hockey players trudged into Highland Arena in St. Paul to take on the St. Paul Highland Park Scots Tuesday, February 17.  “We were out of gas,” said Viking head coach Matt Cottingham.  “We were not on our ‘A’ game and didn’t know what was going to happen.”  But the Vikings have matured to the point they can win a game against an opponent they should probably beat even when they are not at their best.  Ryan Byrkit scored with just over six minutes left in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and the Vikings went on to win the game 4-2.

Lawry goes off for CL in 6-4 win
Chisago Lakes 6, Holy Angels/Richfield 4
Jenna Lawry got a hat trick and more against the Holy Angels/RIchfield Stars.  She scored the last four Wildcat goals, all on the power play, to lead the Wildcat girls’ hockey team to a 6-4 win over the Stars last Thursday at Richfield Ice Arena.  Playmaker Madison Lundeen assisted on all four of Lawry’s goals.  For the Wildcats, a power play that had been largely nonexistent so far this season – converting just four of 35 chances – came alive against Holy Angels.  The Wildcats converted four of seven power play opportunities against the Stars.  “We have been working on the power play in practice,” said Wildcat head coach Dave Burgen.  “We already had nice passing, but we encouraged them to shoot more.  The turning point of the game was having the power play unit put in four pucks in the net like they did.”  And the Wildcats themselves managed to steer clear of the penalty box for the most part, killing off the only Holy Angels power play opportunity of the night.

Vikings on pace for something special; finally host a 'home' meet
Cambridge 143.725, North Branch 142.475
Although North Branch didn’t beat Class AA juggernaut Cambridge-Isanti, they put up a big enough score to really send shockwaves around the Class A landscape. They won’t be mistaken for Detroit Lakes, who are the best team in the state regardless of class (they put up an absurd 147.525 this year already), but North Branch’s score places them firmly in the top three in the state in Class A, and fighting with Melrose for the second spot.
