AREA HOOPS ROUNDUP

CHISAGO LAKES
Boys
The Wildcats got a statement win over Hill-Murray on Thursday, December 21, beating the Pioneers 68-48 in their last game before Christmas.

Will Tinjum led the offensive onslaught with 16 points, Nils Gulbranson had 15 points, Dalton Wood added 11 and Zac Erickson chipped in 10 points. Seth Thompson had eight points and Mitchell Barrett rounded out the barrage with six points off the bench.

The ‘Cats led by nearly 20 at halftime, and cruised to the easy win in the second half.

The win upped CL’s record to 2-3 on the year. They are currently taking part in the Owatonna Holiday Tournament.

Girls
The Chisago Lakes girls have been off since their upset 59-56 win over Mahtomedi on Tuesday, December 19. They will be taking part in the Monticello Holiday Tournament over break. Their opponents will be Waconia on Thursday, December 28 at 4 p.m. and Becker on Friday, December 29 at 2 p.m.

They’ll open the Mississippi 8 Conference schedule with a tilt against St. Francis on Tuesday, January 2.

NORTH BRANCH
Boys
North Branch failed to get their first win of the year in an away game against Hermantown on Thursday, December 21.

They traveled to take on the Hawks and had a good showing, but the veteran Hermantown team held off a late NB rally to win 81-67. The Hawks were only 1-7 going into the game, though, so it was a tough one to take for Head Coach Alex Kuhlman, who had been seeing progress in the last few contests.

The Vikings are currently taking part in the Pine Country Bank Holiday Classic in Little Falls. They opened up against Staples Motley after the Press went to print. Their second round game will depend on the results.

Girls
The girls are still struggling with injury and depth issues as they work through a five game skid.

They dropped contests last week to East Central and Cloquet. The Eagles beat NB 64-51. Jillayna Hoppe scored 16 points and Kate Carlson had 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along in the losing effort.

Hosting Cloquet, the Vikings fell 63-55 despite holding a lead for most of the first half. Carlson had her second straight double-double, scoring 11 points and grabing 11 boards. Megan Bunes had a career-high 19 points, but it was all for anught as the Lumberjacks stormed back to take a lead late in the first half and held onto it throughout the second half. They were led by Carmen Foss, who scored 23 points. Kendra Kelley had 17 and Vanna Kelley had 15. The pair of sisters shot a combined one-of-19 from the field, but hit eight-of-13 three points, as Cloquet went nine-of-17 from deep for the game, while North Branch went only three-of-14.

The Vikings are playing in a Little Falls Holiday tournament this week, starting at 3:45 on Thursday, December 28.
