North Branch 3, Pine City 2 Cody Moline scored the game winner at 1:48 of overtime to give the Viking boys’ hockey team a 3-2 win over the Pine City Dragons on Tuesday, December 19 at the Pine City Civic Center. Viking goalie Trevor Mellen came up big. The Dragons outshot the Vikings 45-25 for the game, including 23-5 in the second period, but Mellen gave the Vikings a chance to win by stopping 43 of the 45 shots he faced. And the Vikings certainly took advantage of their four power play opportunities, scoring all three of their goals on the power play.
Brady Meyer scored the game’s first goal on a power play with four minutes left in the first period, assisted by Justin Sachs and Nick Jensen. Pine City’s Jordan Stich scored twice in the second period to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. Four minutes into the third period, Jacob Richards scored a power play goal to tie the game at 2-2. Meyer and Moline assisted. And Moline, assisted by Sachs and Richards, made sure the Vikings had a nice bus ride back from Pine City with his game-winning power play goal in overtime.
St. Michael-Albertville 9, North Branch 1 Early in the first period, the St. Michael-Albertville Knights scored twice just 33 seconds apart to take 2-0 lead and never looked back on their way to a 9-1 win over the Vikings.
