North Branch wins home tourney, ups record to 10-0 on the season

The Lady Vikings breezed through their home tournament last weekend to run their record to 10-0 on the year.

The spotless run through the tourney included wins over Esko, Cloquet, Sartell and St. Francis, which allowed the Vikings to see some potential future section competition, as they weren’t scheduled when NB was moved to Class AA.

The Vikings opened with a 25-14, 24-13 demolition of the Esko Eskomos. Cianna Selbitschka led North Branch’s attack with 12 kills. She added five digs on the defensive side of the ball.

Other girls who got in on the offensive onslaught were Madison Hadrava, Katelyn Berg, Lydia Langevin, Macy Bombard and Haley Hadrava.

Things got even more out of hand for North Branch when they faced off against Cloquet in the second match up of the day.

The Vikings barely let the Lumberjacks into double digits, winning 25-10, 25-9.

Berg led the Lady Vikes with eight kills. She also had five aces and 11 digs for a phenomenal all around game.  Haley Hadrava had six kills to go along with 13 assists.

The first tougher challenge of the day came from Sartell-St. Stephen, but North Branch’s talent and skill won out still, as they tromped 25-17, 25-19. Selbitschka was back as the focal point of the offense, crushing 16 kills and swatting two blocks from the Sabre attack. Langevin added seven kills and Madison Hadrava had five, keeping North Branch’s perfect record in tact.

In the championship game against typical conference rival St. Francis, North Branch got off to a fast start, winning the first set 25-12, before sealing the flawless day with a 25-21 win in the second set.

Selbitschka had 15 kills, Langevin had four kills and Berg added three in the championship game rout.

North Branch hasn’t lost a set yet this month in seven wins. Their last set loss was against Forest Lake on August 31.

The toughest test of their season so far is coming up this week, however. North Branch will host St. Michael-Albertville on Thursday, September 21 at 7 p.m. The Knights have finished in the top two in the Mississippi 8 Conference for the past five years, and always have a tough team. The Knights are 8-3 on the year, but their three losses have come to teams that are a combined 25-6 on the year.
