Magnuson only Wildcat to win at true team, takes top spot in 1600, 3200

True Team Section Meet
The Wildcat boys’ and girls’ track teams participated in the nine-team Section 5AAA True Team meet Tuesday, May 6 at Cambridge-Isanti High School. The boys finished seventh and the girls finished ninth. Blaine won the boys’ meet and Forest Lake won the girls’ meet. Those teams will represent the section at the state True Team meet. A True Team meet differs from a regular track meet in a few ways. Each school enters exactly three participants in each individual event and one team in each relay event. Also, each athlete may only participate in up to three events, so team depth is important. Every participant who finished the event, from first place to last, earns team points. So, in individual events in a nine-team tournament like this one, first place gets 27 points, second place gets 26, etc. The 27th place participant gets one point.

In relay events, points go 36, 32, 28, and so on, all the way down to 4 for last place. In regular track, only the top few finishers earn team points, and the first place finisher gets a premium for finishing first. So at a True Team event, it always pays to finish since meets can be won or lost because someone earned a couple of points in an event. Ironman Andy Magnuson was the only first place finisher for the Wildcats on the day. In fact, he won both the 1600 meter run, with a time of 4:34.83, and the 3200 meter run, with a time of 9:57.45. Quinton Lee finished third in the 400 meter dash and fifth in the 800 meter run. So Magnuson picked up 54 team points in his two events, while Lee earned 48 team points. Frank Brezany came in fourth in the pole vault. For the girls, Hannah Nordby finished second in the 400 meter dash. Sarah Greene came in fourth in the 800 meter run. Emma Leah Trandahl finished fourth in the high jump, seventh in the 100 meter hurdles and eighth in the 300 meter hurdles. That made Trandahl the top individual point getter for the Wildcat girls for the meet, earning 64 of the Wildcats 406 total team points.

The Wildcats will participate in an invitational meet at St. Francis High School this Saturday. It will be their last tune-up before the Mississippi 8 Conference championship meet, which will take place starting at 12:00 noon Tuesday, May 20 at Buffalo Community Middle School Stadium.
