In a nod to the parity in Section 7AAA, sixth-seeded North Branch pulled off an “upset” over third-seeded Princeton in the first round of the playoff bracket last week. Despite the fairly big difference in their seedings, the two teams were much more evenly matched than that. They both came into the game at 12-14 and they had split their two previous meetings this year. The deciding factor was Princeton’s 4-3 record against section opponents against North Branch’s 2-5 record.
But, none of that mattered for the Lady Vikes. They brought the fight to Princeton at every minute of the game and scrapped with the best of them, eventually holding off the Tigers for a 66-64 victory, the closest in their three match ups this year. The win sent the Vikings on to play second-seeded Grand Rapids in the second round. The Thunderhawks beat NB earlier this year 60-49, so there will need to be a change of fortunes for the Vikings to earn a trip into the section finals. The game was played on Wednesday, March 12, after The Press went to print. Check the Chisago County Press’s Facebook page for updates on the girls and for potential future match ups.
