by CHUCK FITZER
Chisago Lakes 4, Legacy Christian Academy 0
The Wildcats special teams were on fire as they scored three goals in five power play opportunities and shut out Legacy Christian Academy 4-0 last Saturday, January 11 at Chisago Lakes Arena. Billy Knaak had a goal and two assists, Trevor Lushanko had three assists and goaltender Bryce Thompson stopped all 18 shots he faced in the Wildcat victory. It was Thompson’s first shutout of the season. Knaak scored a power play goal with two minutes left in the first period, assisted by Brandon Gillespie and Lushanko, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
At 13:27 of the second period, Louis Kastenbauer converted on the power play, assisted by Lushanko and Zak Lambrecht, to make it 2-0. Less than two minutes later, with the teams skating four on four, Ryan Chambers put one into the back of the net to give the Wildcats a three goal lead. Assists on the play went to Blake Lizotte and Knaak. And the Wildcats crushed and Legacy hopes when CJ Haskins scored the third power play goal of the game, assisted by Knaak and Lushanko, midway through the third period. Wildcat head coach Paul Gibson said “All section 5A wins are crucial. I was very pleased with the effort.
Outshooting a quality opponent 47-18 really showed that the guys were ready to play. Particularly, I thought the defensive core played very well and the forwards were hard on the back checks. Although it was a complete team effort, I thought Billy Knaak, CJ Haskins, and Nick Bartz had very good games.” The Wildcats (10-6 overall, 4-0 section, 1-2 conference) take on local rival North Branch tonight at 7 p.m. at Chisago Lakes Arena. They will also play at home Monday, January 20, when Somerset, WI invades Chisago Lakes Arena starting at 7 p.m.
