Section 7A Quarterfinal: Princeton 1, Chisago Lakes 0
The third-seeded Wildcats and sixth-seeded Tigers played to a 1-1 overtime tie earlier this season. The section semifinal game played last Saturday afternoon, October 12 appeared to be headed for a shootout, as it looked like the game would end in a 0-0 tie, even after overtime. But with 24 minutes left in regulation, a Princeton play took a shot right at Wildcat goalkeeper Gabby Randall form a tough about ten yards out on the right side of the net. Randall got her hands on it, but the ball appeared to spin out of her hands and rolled right between her legs and into the net to put the Tigers up 1-0. The Wildcats dominated play in the first half, but didn’t get off too many quality shots as Princeton packed the box in the back. At 12 minutes, the Princeton goalie made a save and dropped the ball at the six yard line, but the Wildcats’ rebound shot went over the top of the net to keep the game scoreless. The play was a little more even in the second half, but the Wildcats had the better of the play. Wildcat head coach Chris Haggerty was disappointed, but philosophical, after the game. “The effort was there,” said Haggerty. “But we just didn’t finish our chances. Our inability to step up when we needed to cost us. We made one series of mistakes and it cost us. Our defense was caught too far forward and if they had gotten back in time, the girl never would have taken that shot on Gabby.”

Section 7A Play-In Game: Chisago Lakes 10, Eveleth-Gilbert 0
The Wildcats easily dispatched 14th-seeded Eveleth-Gilbert 10-0 in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs. Lauryn Delzer and freshman Grace Kugel both had hat tricks. The game was played at Chisago Lakes last Thursday, October 10. The win sent the Wildcats to the quarterfinal game against Princeton. Delzer had two assists to go along with her three goals. Kara Herr scored twice and had two assists. Anne Goossen and Katie Wawrzaszek each scored a goal and Wawrzaszek and freshman Lindsey Power each picked up an assist.

Girls’ Section 7A Play-In Game: Princeton 3, North Branch 1
Ashley Richter scored for the Vikings, assisted by Julia Rupp, but it wasn’t enough as the 11th-seeded Vikings fell to sixth-seeded Princeton 3-1 in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs. The game was played at Princeton last Thursday, October 10. The Vikings tied Princeton 1-1 a little over a month ago. The loss ended the 2013 soccer season for the Vikings.

Boys’ Section 7A Play-In Game: Duluth Marshall 6, North Branch 1
The 13th-seeded Vikings fell to fourth-seeded Duluth Marshall 6-1 in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs. The game was played in Duluth on Thursday, October 10.
