Spring Lake Park 5, Chisago Lakes 4 After a weather-related delay of over two weeks, the Wildcat softball team went indoors to start the 2013 season. They played North Suburban Conference foe Spring Lake Park at the Vadnais Dome in Vadnais Heights on Tuesday morning, April 23. A Wildcat rally in the top of the seventh inning fell just short and the Wildcats lost 5-4. Trailing 3-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, the Wildcats rallied to tie the game. Joplin Klick singled to open the inning and moved to third on a double by Alex Smith. One out later, Miranda Steinmetz grounded out to score Klick with the Wildcats’ first run of the season. Anne Vierling singled to drive in Smith and Caty Karwand’s triple scored Vierling to tie the game at 3-3. The score remained tied till the bottom of the sixth, when the Panthers scored twice to take a 5-3 lead. In the top of the seventh, Delaney Doriott doubled on an 0-2 pitch to lead off the inning. One out later, Katelyn Ramberg singled to score Doriott and cut the Panther lead to 5-4. But Klick popped out to the pitcher and Smith grounded out to second to end the rally.
St. Francis 6, Chisago Lakes 4 Playing again at the Vadnais dome right away after the loss to Spring Lake Park, the Wildcats held a 4-3 lead over St. Francis going into the top of the sixth inning. The Fighting Saints rallied for three runs to take a 6-4 lead and held the Wildcats scoreless in the bottom of the inning to claim the victory and drop the Wildcats to 0-2 on the season. With the Wildcats trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the second, Alex Smith smacked a leadoff double. Miranda Steinmetz followed with a single and, two outs later, Caty Karwand doubled to clear the bases and put the Wildcats up 2-1. The Fighting Saints retook the lead with two runs in the top of the third. The Wildcats tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff double by Katelyn Ramberg and a two-out single by Steinmetz. The Wildcats took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Delaney Doriott walked with one out and later scored on a two out single by Ramberg to put the Wildcats up 4-3. But the Fighting Saints scored three times in the top of the sixth on their way to the win.
Chisago Lakes 26, Columbia Heights 1 (5 innings) The Wildcats exploded for 11 runs in the first inning and 8 runs in the second as they cruised to a 26-1 win over hapless Columbia Heights last Thursday, April 25 on the turf field in the Chisago Lakes High School football stadium. The Wildcats piled up 19 hits, including 9 doubles and walked 16 times in the rout. The speedy Breelyn Lang walked four times, had two bunt singles, stole three bases and scored five times for the Wildcats. In just two innings, Delaney Doriott singled twice, walked, stole four bases, scored three runs and drove in two others. Catcher Miranda Steinmetz went 3-4, including two doubles, walked twice, scored three runs and drove in four. Joplin Klick had a similar line, going 3-4 with two doubles, two walks, scoring twice and driving in five. Anne Vierling had three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs and Quinncy Zupko drove in two runs with a double.
Hermantown 2, Chisago Lakes 0 With the Wildcats trailing 2-0 to Hermantown, Delaney Doriott broke up a perfect game with a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh inning. But Hermantown pitcher Katie Thun set down the next three Wildcats, settling for a one-hitter and a 2-0 win over the Wildcats last Saturday, April 27 at the turf field at Chisago Lakes. The Hawks took the lead in the top of the first on a leadoff walk and two errors later in the inning. They manufactured an insurance run in the fourth on a walk, a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt and a squeeze bunt. Thun struck out 11 Wildcats for the game. Alex Smith pitched well for the Wildcats, giving up four hits, five walks and striking out five. The Wildcat record dropped to 2-3 for the season.
