Section 7AA Quarterfinals: #1S Chisago Lakes 40, #4S Mora 24 The top-seeded Chisago Lakes Wildcat wrestlers built an insurmountable 43-0 lead over fourth-seeded Mora, going on to beat the Mustangs 43-24 in the quarterfinals of the Section 7AA tournament held Tuesday, February 12 at North Branch.
The victory sends the Wildcats into the tomorrow night’s semifinal match against Hibbing, the number two seed in the northern half of the section. The match will take place at Pine City High School starting at 5 p.m. If the Wildcats beat Hibbing, they will take on the winner of the other 5 p.m. semifinal, Milaca vs. Grand Rapids, at 7 p.m. the same evening.
Surprise starter Solomon Lunde (106) got the Wildcats off to a rousing start. Trailing 8-7, Lunde scored a takedown with five seconds left in the match to go up 9-8. His opponent, Ethan Pratcher, nearly escaped with one second left, but Lunde held on for the win. Kyle Schoenecker (113) and Aaron Sistrunk (120) pinned their opponents and A.J. Harrington hung on for a 10-9 win to put the Wildcats up 18-0 and on their way to the quarterfinal win. The Wildcats got some depth back into their lineup with the return of injured wrestlers Carson Velaski (145), Mark Sontag (160) and Sean Hoyt (170). Dan Sargeant (220), a recent addition to the lineup on loan from the hockey team, nearly had his first high school win against Mora. He led his opponent, Brady Beier, 3-1, in the third period. With 30 seconds left, Sargeant tried to pick up Beier and go for the pin. But Beier turned it into a reversal to tie the match at 3-3. He nearly pinned Sargeant, but Sargeant’s strength kept him from the fall. Beier was awarded three near fall points as time expired to earn the 6-3 win.
Jonah Westbury (285) was pinned in his match against Austin Richard of Mora. Wildct assistant coach Dave Hinsch said “I don’t expect that to happen again if these two meet again in individual sections. I think Jonah will take care of him next time.”
