Section 7A Playoffs: Hibbing 4, Chisago Lakes 1 For the Wildcat girls hockey team, a season defined by youth – the graduation of a dozen seniors after last season – and key injuries – to Allison Borgstrom, Lauren Borgstrom, Amanda Shoquist and Delaney Doriott – and unfair seeding in the playoffs – a fact acknowledged by Hibbing coach Peter Hyduke – came to an early end last Thursday, February 7. In the quarterfinals of the Section 7A tournament, the seventh-seeded Wildcats lost to the second-seeded Hibbing Bluejackets 4-1 at Hibbing Memorial Arena.
The Bluejackets got on the board quickly, with Erin Scovill scoring just over a minute into the first period to give them a 1-0 lead. Hibbing scored two more goals in the second period and looked they would get into the second intermission with a 3-0 lead. But Allison Ives kept things interesting with an unassisted goal at 15:59 to cut the Bluejacket lead to 3-1 after two. The score stayed that way as the Wildcats battled to close the gap, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Hibbing put the icing on the cake with an empty-netter with three seconds left for the final margin of victory. Wildcat goaltender Amanda Shoquist saved 24 of the 27 shots she faced in the game.
Hibbing beat Moose Lake 3-1 in their section semifinal game and plays Proctor tomorrow night at Cloquet for the section championship. Next year, with key players healthy and a year of experience under their belts, the Wildcats will once again be one of the favorites to win the section championship.
