CL stays busy in opening weekend of grappling

Friday, November 30 Chisago Lakes 38, Hibbing 37 Chisago Lakes 45, Nashwauk-Keewatin 31 Chisago Lakes 54, Park Center 21 Saturday, December 1 Mora 42, Chisago Lakes 32 Grand Rapids 45, Chisago Lakes 30 Chisago Lakes 45, Hibbing 33 Blaine 35, Chisago Lakes 34 The Wildcat wrestling team had a busy weekend to open the 2012 high school wrestling season. On Friday, December 30 they hosted the Chisago Lakes Quadrangular as Chisago Lakes High school. The next day they held the Chisago Lakes Duals, a six-team invitational tournament, at Chisago Lakes High School. The Wildcats went 3-0 at Friday night’s quadrangular and went 1-3 on Saturday. Senior Quade Zupko picked up his 150th career win last weekend, putting him just two behind Dan Dellwo for second place on the Wildcat career wins list. Zupko (145, 152) was one of five Wildcat wrestlers who went 7-0 over the course of the weekend. The other undefeated wrestlers were Kyle Schoenecker (120, 126), Dylan Connell (126, 132), Joe Virga (160, 170) and Mark Sontag (160, 170). The Wildcats wrestled against Hibbing twice over the course of the weekend. In Friday night’s match, the two teams were tied 37-37 after the final match. The match was so close it ended up being decided by the eighth tiebreaker, Criteria H, which is the total of first points scored in each match. The Wildcats won the tiebreaker and were awarded one point to claim the 38-37 win. The Wildcats did remarkably well over the weekend considering the fact that they didn’t field wrestlers for most of their matches at the four highest weights. Wildcat head coach Shawn Frederixon said “We did well to hold our own considering we were giving up that many points in forfeits at the end of each match. We had to get all of our points before we got to the four highest weights. The guys wrestled hard.” But help is on the way soon. Frederixon said “We should get Jonah Westbury and Eric Brown back this week. Kevin Schmidt should be ready to return by next week. Once we get those guys back and do a little moving around, we will have our lineup full.” The Wildcats host St. Francis tonight in a dual meet at Chisago Lakes High School at 7 p.m. Tomorrow they will head up to Brainerd to wrestle in the Brainerd Invitational, which gets underway at 10:30 a.m.won.
