BY CHUCK FITZER
Senior forward Brian Grand scored three of the four goals for the Viking boys' soccer team in a win and two losses last week. Junior forward Tony Ceroll scored the other one. The Vikings beat St. Croix Lutheran 2-1 last Monday, September 28 at North Branch. The next night, they traveled to St. Louis Park and lost 3-1. One week ago today, Thursday, October 1, they lost a thriller to Spring Lake Park, 2-1 in overtime. The two wins and a loss ran the Vikings' season record to 10-4-1 overall and 5-4-0 (good for fifth place) in the conference.
The accolades continue to roll in for Grand. Last week, he was named both the Star Tribune Athlete of the Week, the Chisago County Press Athlete of the Week and the ESPN Rise Boys' Soccer Player of the Week, a national award. The Star Tribune article, by Jim Paulsen, referred to Grand s "the Pied Piper of North Branch soccer." The article also talks about Grand's scoring prowess, his decision to stay at North Branch and how much the team has improved since he arrived at North Branch. You can find the article, published September 29, in the Preps section of startribune.com. The short article accompanying the ESPN Rise award is at http://sports.espn.go.com/highschool/rise/soccer/news/story?id=4519354. As of this writing, Grand leads the state in goals, with 37, and total points, with 49.
The resurgent Vikings are scheduled to finish out their regular season with three home games. They were scheduled to play St. John's Prep and Benilde-St. Margaret's this past Monday and Tuesday, and will finish up against Big Lake this Saturday, October 10 at 11 a.m. Section preliminaries are scheduled to start next Wednesday, October 14, but a (hopefully) high seed for the Vikings should allow them to skip the preliminary round and play their first game on Saturday, October 17. Games reports and a preview of the section tournament will appear in next week's issue of the Chisago County Press.
