BY CHUCK FITZER
Coming into the final week of the regular season, the Vikings league record stands at 6-5. They've been hot lately, winning three of their last four games, including a 5-0 shutout of archrival Chisago Lakes on Wednesday, July 1.
North Branch 6, Cambridge 5
The Vikings exploded for five runs in the fifth, coming away with a 6-5 win over the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets last Tuesday, June 30 at North Branch. Matt Becklin pitched all seven innings for the Vikings, allowing nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
North Branch 7, Princeton 6
Winning pitcher Tyler Ball drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the seventh, and Cole Wilcoxen pitched a perfect seventh inning to close out the Vikings' 7-6 win over Princeton Thursday, July 2 at Princeton. A few North Branch errors late in the game kept the game close.
The teams were knotted at 3-3 after three innings. Sean Graff blasted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to put the Vikings up 5-3. Princeton tied it back up with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The teams again traded runs in the sixth, making it 6-6 going into the seventh. Ball's two-out, opposite field single scored Wilcoxen to make the score 7-6. Wilcoxen then headed to the mound in the bottom of the inning, earning the save by shutting down Princeton 1-2-3.
Ball, who had two hits, went the first six innings to pick up the victory, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out two. Graff had three hits for the Vikings, adding a double to go along with his home run.
Mora 2, North Branch 0
Cole Wilcoxen allowed just two runs in six innings, but the Viking couldn't generate any offense as they fell 2-0 to Mora Monday, July 6 at Mora. The teams finished up a game that had been postponed in the second inning because of rain earlier in the season. After getting two hits in the first inning, the Vikings managed only two hits the rest of the game.
The Vikings were scheduled to play at Pine City Tuesday, July 7, and then finish up the regular season hosting Chisago Lakes tonight, July 9, at 6:30 p.m.
