CL's up-and-down Legion season continues
Thirty eight runs in five games only enough for three wins

BY CHUCK FITZER

Cambridge-Isanti 6, Chisago Lakes 4

Joey Reed's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth pulled the Wildcats to within one run, but the Wildcat rally stalled after that as they lost to Cambridge-Isanti 6-4 last Thursday, June 18 at Chisago Lakes.

With the Wildcats trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the second, Bryan Eichten hit a solo home run to get the Wildcats on the board. Still down 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Cody Bergquist led off with a double. Bergquist was trapped off second on Reed Yehle's ground ball, with Yehle reaching first. Tyler Henderson doubled to right center, and Joey Reed followed with a monster blast over the trees in right field to cut the Cambridge lead to 5-4. One out later, two Wildcats walked, but the next batter struck out to end the inning. Cambridge added a run in the top of the seventh, and the Wildcats went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning as they lost to the Bluejackets for the second time this season.

Chisago Lakes 6, Braham 4

The Wildcats burst out of the gate with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, then hung on behind the pitching of Kyle Buchanan and Tyler Henderson to defeat Braham 6-4 last Monday, June 22 at Chisago Lakes.

Tyler Rivard walked to lead off the first. Buchanan singled to move Rivard to third and then courtesy runner Steve Ramberg stole second. Tyler Henderson's single to right scored both runners, with Henderson reaching third as the ball rolled between the outfielder's legs. Travis Ongstad's single scored courtesy runner Brandon Gorski. Ongstad stole second and scored on Cody Bergquist's single to put the Wildcats up 4-1 after one.

Braham scored two unearned runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to one. In the bottom of the fourth, Rivard walked with one out. Buchanan doubled to right center to put runners on second and third. Rivard scored on Henderson's groundout to short, with courtesy runner Ramberg taking third. Ongstad hit a high bouncer to short. Hustling down the line, he barely beat the throw to first, allowing Ramberg to score to make it 6-3 Wildcats. Braham scored a run in the sixth, but it was all they could manage as the Wildcats won 6-4.

Buchanan allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out two to pick up the win. Henderson struck out six in three innings of relief to get the save. Buchanan also had three hits to lead the Wildcats.

Chisago Lakes 12, Princeton 2 (6 innings)

Pitcher Travis Ongstad allowed just two hits as the Wildcats hit the ball hard and took advantage of a porous Princeton defense to beat the Tigers 12-2 last Tuesday, June 23 at Princeton. The Wildcats scored eight unearned runs in a game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.

With one out in the first inning, the Tiger right fielder misjudged line drives by Cody Bergquist and Tyler Henderson, and both balls went screaming over his head for doubles to put the Wildcats up 1-0. Bryan Eichten then followed with a double to the left center field wall that looked like it should have been caught, causing Henderson to hold up at third. Three more Wildcat runs scored on an error, a double steal and a single by Brandon Gorski. In the second, Bryant Nelson reached on an error to lead off the inning and, two outs later, Tyler Henderson hit a laser over the left field wall for a home run.

The Wildcats scored six more runs in the third on four hits, a walk and three errors by the Tiger third baseman. Henderson drove in two of the runs with a double, and Sean McConville, Red Yehle and Bergquist each drove in a run, as well.

Ongstad was superb, allowing two earned runs on two hits, five walks and a hit batter. He struck out six, kept the ball down and allowed just one ball to be hit out of the infield all night. Henderson led the Wildcat attack with two doubles, a home run and five RBIs.

Chisago Lakes 12, St. Francis 2 (6 innings)

Tyler Henderson continued his torrid hitting, going 5-for-5 with a double, a homerun and five RBIs to lead the Wildcats to a 12-2 win over the St. Francis Fighting Saints last Thursday, June 25 at Chisago Lakes. The game was the first game of a doubleheader and was shortened to six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Cody Bergquist also had a big night at the plate for the Wildcats, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Jake Warkel reached base in all four of his plate appearances, walking twice, singling and being hit by a pitch. Leadoff hitter Tyler Rivard walked four times in five plate appearances. Rivard also turned in a stellar complete game pitching performance, allowing two runs (both unearned) on four hits. He struck out five and walked five. The most serious Saints threat came in the first inning as Rivard walked the bases loaded with one out. But the next batter lined to third baseman Bryan Eichten for an unassisted double play to end the inning and keep the Saints off the scoreboard.

St. Francis 5, Chisago Lakes 3

Trailing 4-1 entering the top of the sixth, the Wildcats (6-4 overall, 5-3 league) rallied for two runs to pull within one against St. Francis in the second game of the doubleheader, and still had the bases loaded with no outs. But the rally fizzled after that, thanks in part to a questionable strike call by the home plate umpire, and the Wildcats went on to lose 5-3 to the Fighting Saints. The game was played at Chisago Lakes, but St. Francis was the home team since this was a makeup of a game rained out earlier this season at St. Francis.

Kyle Buchanan singled to left to lead off the sixth and moved to third on Tyler Henderson's double to left. Cody Bergquist walked to load the bases. Travis Ongstad and Jake Warkel each walked on four pitches, forcing in two runs and cutting the St. Francis lead to 4-3. The next batter, Steve Ramberg, worked the count to 2-2. Ramberg took the next pitch, which came in at forehead level. But the umpire decided to call it strike three, and Ramberg was out. The next two batters struck out and grounded out to end the rally. The Saints added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Henderson reached on a two-out error in the top of the seventh. Cody Bergquist worked the count to 2-1. The next pitch came in neck high, but was called a strike. Bergquist swung at a pitch that may have been high for strike three, but couldn't afford to take the pitch due to the inconsistent strike zone that had been present during the game.

The Wildcats' went up 1-0 in the fourth as Bergquist singled. Stole second and scored on Ongstad's single. But St. Francis scored four runs over the next two innings to take a 4-1 lead.

Warkel started and pitched well for the Wildcats, allowing four runs (two unearned) on three hits in five innings. He struck out five, walked three and hit a batter. Travis Ongstad allowed an unearned run in the sixth before Henderson came in to strike out the final batter of the inning with the bases loaded.
