Wyoming street bond vote set for Aug. 27

The Wyoming City Council met June 4 and set a date of August 27 for a special election, where the city will ask voters to okay the sale of road reconstruction bonds.

North Branch policing debate an agonizing one

It was a tough crowd that Sheriff Rick Duncan faced Thursday night in North Branch. The sheriff brought a powerpoint presentation illustrating potential costs for contracting to eliminate policing costs. The North Branch City Council sought an RFP, for sheriff’s personnel to provide city law enforcement service. Sheriff Duncan was frequently interrupted with jeers from 100 or so people crammed into the city hall foyer and council chambers.

Story of father he never met brings life to Vietnam War Memorial names
When Father’s Day rolls around this Sunday we can think of one group of students who, just maybe, will view their dads through a slightly brighter lens thanks to the story of someone who never met his.  Chisago Lakes High School instructor Bridget Budig recently told the Press about what happened after her colleague, English Instructor Janelle Hermann;  ran a letter-to-the-editor in the Press in May, recruiting volunteers who had personal experiences relevant to the Vietnam Wall,  to contact her and share the story with her students.

A Franconia Township woman, facing trial on seven felony counts of theft of medical costs, pled guilty June 4 to two counts, in a plea agreement presented to District Judge John McBride.

Law Enforcement

The Sheriff’s Boat & Water Patrol is out on various county lakes and has issued a few citations, mostly for equipment violations. June 6 a suspect was located by a deputy on patrol and directed to return to the Tesoro Station at #17 in Lent Township, after causing damage in the gas pump island area and leaving the scene. The deputy said the suspect vehicle hit a diesel pump damaging the pylon and rupturing a fuel pumpline above ground. Incident happened about 11 p.m.

Come to North Branch this weekend; Harmony in the Park begins this week

North Branch is hosting a really neat event this weekend. The 5th annual Red Bull Military Appreciation Day takes place this Sunday in Central Park. What is Military Appreciation Day? It is a venue filled with military vehicles and memorabilia that many of us have never seen before. There is also a classic car show in the park. There are kids games as well as blow up jumpers too. There will be silent auctions and food vendors on hand. There is no admission and the public is invited. Come on out, it promises to be very cool. It runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Anoka County Sheriff’s Dept. is investigating a two car crash, asssiated by the State Patrol. The crash happened June 5 on Lexington Avenue at Lever Street, and killed Richard McGill and Deanna McGill, both 71, of the Stacy area. The crash site was reported Wednesday, June 5 by a passer-by about 8 a.m. The accident involved the McGill’s Ford sedan and a Toyota SUV, driven by a 33-year-old man from Maplewood. The sheriff’s press release said the elderly couple was dead at the scene.

Betty Ford Center, Hazelden Foundation pursue alliance
Hazelden Foundation and Betty Ford Center, leaders in addiction treatment, are pursuing a formal alliance. Both Hazelden and Betty Ford offer intensive treatment programs for persons addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs. The boards of both institutions have approved in principle the concept of a formal alliance between the widely-respected institutions.

Wyoming road vote set for Aug. 27
The Wyoming City Council has set a date for a special election, where the city will ask voters to okay the sale of road reconstruction bonds. The council will be working over the next several weeks to get the bonding details out to the community and will also schedule at least one meeting with residents. The ballot question in the special August 27 election, will ask: Shall the city of Wyoming be authorized to issue its general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $2,775,000 to provide funds for street reconstruction and related utility improvements designated as City Project 13-01?

Congratulations to newest Eagle Scout
Only about four percent of Boy Scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout and Zachary Markgraf, 16, recently joined this elite group.  He met requirements for the Eagle Scout level in March when he was just 15-years-old.  A ceremony presenting him the Eagle Award was held last month, at Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City.

Law Enforcement
Twin brothers from Isanti County are being held in connection with an alleged burglary at Rustic Inn, Stacy, Tuesday, May 28.  Squads responding to a suspicious vehicle report were assisted by a K9 unit in tracking the males, found behind a residence on 302nd Street, about 5 a.m.

  A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Fairview’s new St. Croix Orthopaedic Center.  The center is an addition to the hospital and is amazing.  They have built a 21,000 square foot addition at the cost of 5.6 million dollars.

Senior center dining program lacks diners; food provider contract cancelled as of May 31
The number of diners participating in the catered meal service at the senior center in North Branch, has been insufficient to warrant continuing the program. As of May 31, Taher Dining, North Branch School District’s contract food service provider-- halted its delivery of prepared meals to the senior center in North Branch. The contract between Taher and the North Branch senior center went into effect in March 2013.
