Raspberries are at their peak
Raspberries, blueberries, black raspberries, etc. are at their peak in backyard patches, roadside stands, farmer’s market and “pick your own” places. Growing up on our small farm, we found there were blackberries growing among their thorny bushes, along with itch weed!âWearing jeans and long sleeved shirts, bucket in hand, my younger brother and I went picking in a patch not far from the house. Dan and I would have a contest to see who could pick the most berries.âI always lost as half of them went into my mouth instead of the bucket. If you’re not familiar with blackberries, they are a smaller version of a raspberry, about the size of a pea and are black.âWe always picked enough so mom could bake a blackberry pie. Very tasty memories.

South Green Lake Cemetery vandalism ignites community spirit
About 50 or 60 volunteers were in South Green Lake cemetery Tuesday morning tackling prep-work,  for a monument company to re-set about 100 gravestones that were toppled by vandals.  The crime is under investigation and if anybody has any information that would help get to the bottom of this senseless and costly destruction,  please contact Lakes Area Police, 651 257-0622 and leave information. Or, you can always call the county sheriff’s general hotline, 257-4100 and talk with authorities.  The Zion Lutheran Church in Chisago City is responsible for South Green Lake Cemetery and can be reached at 257-2715 if you want to donate to assist the response project expenses.

A full meal summertime salad
Here I am again with salads. Specifically, main meal salads. Summer time leads me to making full meal salads which we both enjoy. However, I can’t get away with making a tuna salad as I would have to eat it myself. I spoil Bud a bit when making a tuna salad by combining the main ingredients in a bowl, putting half in another bowl with cooked, cubed chicken in one portion and tuna in the other. I’d say that’s being diplomatic! I usually serve the salad with some kind of bread and fresh fruit, it really is a full meal deal. Today’s recipes are those using chicken and ham.
