Meet Chisago Lakes Chamber Community Ambassador

Just a few years ago…well 45 to be exact, Bill and Sue Mack settled into their home in Chisago City, where they still live and thrive today.  Bill had begun teaching math in White Bear Lake two years earlier and Chisago City looked like a great place to settle in and begin life with his lovely bride. Raised in Wisconsin, Bill graduated from Dominican High School in White Fish Bay and continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, earning a Bachelor of Science in Math Education.

His teaching career began in 1971 instructing students grades 7-12, opening their minds to the facts and figures of Pre Algebra through Pre Calculus. Until 2006, Bill served as the Math Department Chair and also the Curriculum Coordinator for the department.

It is not hard to imagine and none would argue the three times Bill was nominated as ‘Teacher of the Year’  and was twice awarded ‘Teacher of Excellence.’

Always a leader, Bill gave of his time and talent to serve as the District 4 Director for the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics and worked to create the “Best Practice” techniques for Minnesota Math Teachers.

Bill cultivated his hobby of yard work into a professional career and in 1985 Mack Landscaping was born. Three decades later, Bill is backing out of full time landscaping while still enjoying dabbling in his yard, creating beauty by way of nature. Through this time period in his career, Bill has been active in the Chisago Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and has been an inspiration to new businesses  beginning their journey in the community.

During teaching, landscaping and volunteering, Sue and Bill raised four kids in this great community of Chisago Lakes; Jason, John, Carrie and Jamie and have 12 wonderful grandchildren to love and adore.

Bill is everywhere in the community and is not one to passively sit by and observe. Currently he is the Director of International Activities and the Chair of Casino Night as an active member of the Chisago Lakes Rotary. In addition, he chairs the Santa Anonymous and Food Shelf collection events and has also served as President of the Rotary.

With his passion for outdoor activities, Bill chairs the Chisago City Parks Commission and is the creator and leader for O.W.L.L.S; Ojiketa Wednesdays for Laughs, Lunch and Service.

Bill doesn’t limit his involvement to Chisago Lakes. He shares his time and talents being a member of the Chisago County Friends of the Homeless, an east central regional effort, collecting furniture and household items for families in the New Pathways program,  for use as they transition from homelessness.

Kayaking is one of Bill’s hobbies, and he helped to initiate and is now maintaining and promoting, the Chisago Lakes Water Trail. What a fantastic addition to the area! Check out the Chisago Lakes Water Trail and make sure to participate in events that this group organizes.

Re-connecting with his passion for teaching in his retirement years, Bill has been a Junior Achievement Instructor at Lakeside School for the past three years and on Tuesdays he and Sue pack food as a part of the “Backpacks for Kids” program, also at Lakeside School.

With Rotary, he was the director for the Student Exchange Program.  Religious Education at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church is another area that Bill has applied his love for teaching.

Bill has also been a member and chairman of St. Bridget’s Parish Council and a Past Grand Knight (Knights of Columbus) as well as President of the Chisago Lakes Hockey Association prior to and during the construction of the Hockey Arena. Through a combination of volunteering and involvement in Chisago Lakes over the years Bill is on the list of those honored as the Grand Marshal in the Ki Chi Saga Days parade and now, as the Chisago Lakes Chamber Community Ambassador.

And what does Bill do in his spare time?  What spare time you may ask. He also enjoys to kayaking, biking and traveling. He and Sue are planning a trip to Ireland this year which will include seven days hiking the Ring of Kerry and then five days biking on the West Coast.
Some past travels include England, Scotland, France, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia, as well as kayaking the coast of Sweden.
