4/3/2014 4:05:00 PM Estate sale proceeds to help fund scholarship to honor loved educator
Peg McCubbin graduated from Macalaster College with a degree in biology and started teaching elementary school children in St. Paul. She’d been married to Bruce for 20 years when he suddenly died, and she returned to teaching. Only this time she worked in the Chisago Lakes School District, where she and Bruce had built their house- in-the-country.
Peg had no children of her own, but tutored high school students for 20 years. Her students will tell you she provided more than academic support; she shared valuable guidance and life advice, and quite a few handmade knit scarves and even some sweaters along the way. Peg died last July at the age of 75. But her legacy will live on through the Peg McCubbin Scholarship. The fund is getting a boost, with 100 percent of proceeds from this week’s huge estate sale, taking place at 15088 Pleasant Valley Road, rural Center City.
The sale is April 4 - 6. Friday the sale opens at 10 a.m. and goes until 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday sale hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Chersti Rydning, who counts Peg as a personal mentor, friend and guardian angel said the scholarship is being overseen through the Chisago Lakes Education Foundation (CLEF). This year is the first awarding for the memorial scholarship. Details for applying are available through counselors at the high school, and even students who have graduated, but who were tutored by McCubbin, can be eligible.
Rydning said everybody attending Peg’s funeral last summer had stories about how inspirational and caring Peg was, and so friends of the family got together to establish this scholarship as a way to continue Peg’s legacy of opportunity. If you are not able to get to the sale you can show support with a donation made out to CLEF mailed in care of John and Lisa Rydning 14988 Pleasant Valley Road, Center City, MN 55012.
