The four Lakes Area Police commissioners voted last week to solicit proposals from professional designers for a space needs assessment for a possible police department project. Lakes Area Police officials are in the very early stage of considering a project to provide new space for staff, equipment and operations. The members of the commission are Mayors Bob Gustafson and Keith Carlson and council members Curt Flug and Joe Sroga. The police commissioners estimate the fundamental work generated from one of these proposals will cost about $5,000.
The police commission was advised last week by Deputy Chief Bill Schlumbohm, that the department is at 3,000 square feet currently, which law enforcement standards would generally describe as not being adequate. Some recommendations the commissioners heard were resulting from a “facility planning guide” compiled by the International Association of Police Chiefs, looking at similarly-sized departments. Lakes Area Police will eventually need a square footage and design estimate and so the commissioners voted to support going out for this RFP. Meanwhile, the new Chisago City Fire Hall project is moving forward. The firefighters had approached the police about creating a “Public Safety Building” and including Lakes Area P.D. space in the fire hall project. Schlumbohm told the Press after the meeting the fire hall has not been ruled out as an option.
