Veterans Day is around the corner, this year on Monday of next week. It is designated a national holiday to recognize the many sacrifices our veterans have made in service to our country. Please say a word of thanks to our veterans for their service to our country, men and women numbering 4,465 strong in Chisago County alone. According to the Federal Veterans Administration, more than $21.9 million was provided in medical care, education and compensation/pension benefits in 2012 to our county veterans. Approximately half or $11 million is disability (compensation) benefits alone.
Service members who incur an injury, accident or disease can make a claim for service-connected disability with the VA Federal Regional Office near Ft. Snelling. VA Health Care is provided to enrolled veterans who qualify. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), veterans enrolled into VA Health Care need not shop online with MNSURE for insurance. The Chisago County VSO can also assist qualifying veterans seeking to enroll in VA Health Care. Generally, households with gross incomes less than $60,000 per year may be eligible for some level of VA Health Care coverage. Veterans who believe they may qualify for VA Health Care should contact the VSO and begin the enrollment process to determine eligibility. Chisago County offers to Chisago County veterans a hassle free ride on the county veterans transit bus (in photo) from their home in Chisago County, to a medical appointment at the VA Health Care System, Minneapolis on even numbered business days.
The cost is minimal and our Veterans Services drivers are ready and willing to make the day a pleasant experience. Veterans wishing to access this service can do so by calling 651-213-5605 to ask to schedule their medical trip to the VA Health Care System. In 2011 the Veterans Service Office for Chisago County was moved from North Branch back to the courthouse at 313 N Main St, Center City, MN 55012. We are on the ground level, within Health and Human Services Department, Room 239. Anyone who needs an appointment can call ahead to the Veterans Services clerical 651-213-5605, or may call Al Budde, County Veteran Service Officer at 651-213-5680 with any veteran benefits related question. While November 11, 2013 marks Veteran’s Day to remember and honor those who have served our country… ANY day is a good day to Thank a Veteran.
