1/24/2013 10:21:00 AM All of your Celebration of
the Lakes info you need
With all of the build up, it is finally here. The Celebration of the Lakes is officially on and it looks like the weather will cooperate. We are hoping and praying that the winds are calm and the balloons will fly.
It all gets rolling on Friday night with the annual Pilot’s Reception, Chili Cook-Off and Potluck. Held at Lindstrom Community Center, the public is invited to bring a side dish, dessert or a beverage to share. You must have a Celebration of the Lakes button for admittance. There is still time to enter the Chili contest, please call Laura at 257-5113 for details.
Saturday, please dress warm and come out early to the ice in Center City. The balloons are scheduled to take off at 7:45 am. If it happens, when it happens, it is a spectacular sight, so be sure to bring your cameras. As soon as the balloons lift off, strap on the skates and enjoy a huge community ice rink.
If you are a runner, there is a 5K run/walk taking place at 10 a.m. You are asked to please come early and register in the warming tent. If running in the cold isn’t your thing, take a stroll over to the pro ice snowmobile races. If you like racing, but not so much snowmobiles, there are car ice races on South Lindstrom Lake on Saturday and Sunday. Grab the kids and try to find the Celebration of the Lakes hidden Medallion. The lucky winners will take home $100 cash.
As always, you must have a Celebration of the Lakes button to win. Something that started last year became so popular that it is back again this year. The Smoosh Race has teams of four strap themselves to two large skis and try to beat the other teams in a 50 yard race. It is hilarious and quite difficult. At noon, there is a free balloon tether that features free rides to anyone who has a COL button. Also at noon, dog sled rides will begin. You can purchase tickets in the concession tent. The concession tent is a huge tent where people can come warm themselves, get some hot food, coffee or hot chocolate.
The tent opens early on Saturday and Sunday. Just outside the tent is an area dedicated to kids games. Usually they have six or seven kids games that give out prizes. Also just outside the tent at 1 p.m. is the annual Kiddie Parade. Dress your children up in their favorite 50’s costumes. Prizes will be awarded for top participants. Teams are still being sought for the golf tournament taking place on the ice Saturday afternoon. Please call Jill at 257-1483 for info or to register.
At 3:30 the balloons will again attempt a launch. (Keeping our fingers crossed that the balloons will fly at all three scheduled lift offs.) At 6:30 on Saturday, there is a dance at the Lindstrom Community Center. The ultra-popular polka band The Chmielewskis will be performing, so put on your dancing shoes. Don’t let the polka band scare you younger people, I have seen this band, and everyone has a great time. Sunday begins with the third balloon launch back on the lake.
Trinity Church will be hosting a pancake breakfast if you need to warm up. Unfortunately the radar runs scheduled for Sunday have been cancelled (not for thin ice). Grab your ice fishing gear and head back to North Center Lake for the Lions Ice Fishing Contest. The contest begins at 1 p.m. and there is a prize given for every fish caught. Bring your own bait, cost is $7 per line and $3 per kids line.
We are putting the finishing touches on our Community Guide. If your business would like to be in the guide, please give us a call at 651-257-5115 or email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. We would be happy to help you create a great message that will last all year.
