Firefighters bring down house in Chisago business zone
BY PAUL RIGNELL

They could still walk on bare grass and not trudge through snow, when Chisago City firefighters on Dec. 8 conducted a training burn at 29515 Lofton Avenue (County Road 24). The property is north, across Berglund Ave, from Chisago Hardware and Frankie’s Live Bait & Marine. Marine business owner Frankie Dusenka filed for a conditional use permit from the city to expand his retail sales area, with fenced parking space, using the former residential lot. The property has been zoned for Central Business at least 10 years, according to City Planner Courtney Wiekert, who shared information from a 2002 zoning map. Dusenka told the Chisago County Press that Frankie’s Marine LLC has owned the lot since mid-November. Dusenka said this was the fourth house acquired by the company in its expansion history. Business boomed through the peak season in 2012, he said. “Business is good, actually up 80 percent for 2012, and we expect another 30 to 40 percent increase in 2013,” Dusenka said. “We’re getting prepared.” Chisago’s Planning Commission has studied the request for a Conditional Use Permit, and forwarded it for City Council consideration. The city’s volunteer firefighters were joined in the training drill by some from the Almelund department, said fire training chief John Guse. Department volunteers must participate in 24 hours of annual training to maintain their state licensure, he added. The department can also schedule training drills in a “burn trailer,” Guse said. Chisago City’s department conducted the Dec. 8 drill with a burn team assigned by state agency Fire Instruction and Rescue Education (F.I.R.E., Inc.), based in Motley. Prior approval from Chisago County as well as the state Pollution Control Agency and Department of Natural Resources was also obtained. Guse said Chisago firefighters expect their next drill in January or February, involving a farmhouse near South Chisago Lake.
