Does the number 285 hold any meaning for you? It could if you are a commuter considering a New Year’s Resolution to save money, or want to do something in 2013 for the planet. Bus #285 is the commuter route to St. Paul. It comes out of the Transit Station in Forest Lake and Running Aces park & ride. It has a parallel route #275 that comes out of Lino Lakes, if you find it simpler to start at the Lake Drive park&ride. All sites let you park for free. As of December 8, Metro Transit is assuming operations of this bus line from the RushLine Corridor organization, according to a press release from the Metro Transit offices. There will also be some route changes starting Saturday. The bus out of Forest Lake at 7:18 a.m. is being eliminated. The 5:20 p.m. pick-up in St. Paul at Minnesota and 6th headed north is also being eliminated. There’s timepoints being added when in St. Paul-- at Smith Avenue and Fifth Street and MN Avenue and 6th (at Cedar.) To commute on #285 costs just $3 during rush hours and $2.25 in the non-rush service times. Senior citizens (65 years old or older) and youth younger than 13 can ride for 75 cents in non-rush or $2.25 during the in demand commute hours. Coach buses run Monday through Friday, they do not provide service on major Holidays though. The bus also has a bike rack if you need to haul your bike. As of December 8 the express bus routes are also re-structured along 5th and 6th Streets in downtown St. Paul to improve travel times and to lure more local riders. Route 285 will pick- up at Centerville and Cub Foods/White Bear Lake theatres-- keeping the coach bus moving right along. To transfer or ride around St. Paul is 50 cents.
