Tanzanian music, dress at Immanuel Lutheran church service Nov. 18

Immanuel Lutheran Church, Almelund, will be observing "Itonya Sunday" November 18, at 9:30 a.m. In 2007 the congregation voted to support a Lutheran parish in Tanzania, Africa, through a program called, "Bege Kwa Bega," which means in English, "Shoulder to Shoulder." They support this congregation through the St. Paul Area Synod, and yearly send monetary support to them. The youth sponsor two students who are now able to go on to secondary education. They have also been able to supply this parish with transportation, namely a motor bike, for the pastor and three regular bicycles for the three 3 evangelists serving this parish. This is their only means of transportation, along with walking. Itonya Lutheran Parish is located in the highlands of Tanzania and has four preaching points with a newly appointed pastor (first one they ever had!) and evangelists who serve these points. Pastor Tom Nielsen, a member of Immanuel, returned after a 3-month stay in Tanzania.

He is one of the volunteer coordinators of this Bega Kwa Bega program and lives in Iringa, Tanzania, during this time. He was able to visit Itonya Parish in both 2007 and 2009, along with his wife JoAnn. Immanuel's Interim Pastor Tom Hansen, along with his wife Beth, is also one of the volunteer coordinators of the Bega Kwa Bega program and will return in 2013 to volunteer with this program, as well as coordinating a special “Day of Grace” for Tanzanian Clergy and their spouses in January. Immanuel is very pleased to have both Pastors present on the 18th some of their vast experiences they have been privileged to have in Iringa. November 18 Immanuel will feature ALL Tanzanian/African music, African clothing, African crafts/gifts/pictures at their worship service, led by the Church Choir and other participants. Following this service the congregation will be able to taste some of the Tanzanian food most commonly eaten by the people and enjoy more music and fellowship. Immanuel invites friends in the community to worship November 18 and celebrate as well as learn more about this mission. The church is located on Highway 95 mid-way between North Branch and Taylors Falls. For further information, please call the church office, 651-538-2340.
