10/4/2012 9:02:00 AM Only a few days until property tax deadline
Second half of 2012 taxes are due by October 15. The first half is paid by May 15 each year. (If your land is classified as agriculture, you have until November 15 for payment.) County Treasurer, Lee Olson reminds property owners the county website does provide an electronic payment option, but there is a processing/convenience fee to use a credit card on-line. See co.chisago.mn.us and find “Treasurer” and click on it. For in person payments, the treasurer’s office is on the ground floor of the county government center in Center City. Olson explained that it’s early yet, but the end of the first week of October he usually gets a good feel for how revenue is coming in. Even with foreclosures so prevalent now, Olson explained that delinquent tax payments are “not nearly as bad” as some might think. Banks that hold the mortgages don’t want penalties and interest to accumulate anymore than anybody else does. He estimated that the current economic challenges might result in “maybe one percent” more delinquent tax bills than what’s ordinarily anticipated in county budgeting.
