Beginning Saturday, September 8, eleven youth actors and one adult teaching artist will bring to life the stories of young Tom Sawyer, as adapted for the stage by Virginia Glasgow Koste. “The Trial of Tom Sawyer” will run for seven public performances through September 16. Having such rich material to work with has provided Director Stephen Pearce plenty of opportunity to stretch his young cast and the willing students have taken full advantage of the professional process. “What I love about working with the Festival Theatre youth is that they are given freedom to explore their own creativity,” says Pearce. “I think that is why so many keep coming back. They are given experiences that allow them to express themselves and become artists.” When asked what they like about participating in Festival Theatre productions, many cast members immediately mention their new friends and the fun of performing. But also important is the discipline and challenge of the arts education program. Seventeen year old Kasey Heimstead, now in her sixth play at Festival Theatre, put it this way: “What I love about working for Festival Theatre is the professional environment, the community, and the way we feel like a family – even the adults.” Lucy Herman, one of the youngest in the cast, says, “I like the people here, and exploring my characters and seeing how they are different from characters I have played before.” Participating youth are Brita Gallagher (Dresser, WI), Liam Gallagher (Dresser, WI), Kasey Heimstead (Balsam Lake, WI), Jasper Herman (St. Croix Falls, WI), Lucy Herman (St. Croix Falls, WI), Addie Koenig (Luck, WI), Frankie Miller (St. Croix Falls, WI), Fiona Nieve (North Branch, MN), Jeremiah Peer (Dresser, WI), Olivia Peer (Dresser, WI), and Taylor Tolzman (Taylors Falls, MN). Joining the youth on stage is Teaching Artist Andrew Bradford Benson (Davenport, IA), who also performed in “Man of La Mancha” and “Honk!” over the summer. Says Benson, “Working with youth at Festival Theatre is always a great experience. They bring so much energy and a willingness to work and learn that we can’t help but have a good time.” The production team also includes Danette Olsen (Executive Director),Stephen Pearce (Director), Jaclyn Johnson (Production Coordinator), David Markson (Set Design), Gina Bonin (Costume Design), Todd Reemtsma (Lighting Design), Peter Weber (Stage Manager), and Eric Thorstad (Assistant Stage Manager). Tickets for the play are $13.50 for adults and $8.50 for youth and are available online at www.festivaltheatre.org, at the box office, or by phone at 715-483-3387. Festival Theatre is located in downtown St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin at 210 North Washington Street.
