Township officers end the year meeting at Fish Lake Town Hall, sharing news from county solid waste coordinator

BY ERIC VARGO
Correspondent

The Chisago County Township Association met at Fish Lake Township town hall for a combined November and December meeting. The Township Association used to meet in a different township's hall each month, but recent meetings have been held at the county senior center in North Branch because of its central location. With the news that the senior center may be on the list of budget cuts the county will be considering, the Association's members jokingly agreed to start, "wandering" again, should the senior center become unavailable.

Amador Township has re-roofed the bell tower on the town hall and established recycling days for 2010. The township is looking into building a bike trail near the ballpark "to give the teenagers something to do" in an effort to counter the occasional incidents of vandalism occurring near the heritage museum.

The township's fire hall financing has not been secured yet; if a bond effort doesn't pan out, the township will "re-look at" the project, it was reported.

Sunrise is looking into finding funding for the Kost Dam project, which is estimated to have a $600,000 final price tag. This is equivalent to an entire year's budget for the township. If outside money is unavailable, the project will be delayed in favor of other budget items.

The Outstanding Township Officer of the Year award went to Jim Froberg of Chisago Lakes Township. Upon receiving the award, Froberg expressed his high opinion of the township officers and the Township Association's work.

The guest speaker of the night was Lisa Thibodeau, the county's Solid Waste Coordinator. Mrs. Thibodeau explained the role of the county's Household Hazardous Waste Facility and distributed information on the various disposal options available in the county. She asked the townships to not accept or to dispose of hazardous waste, and instructed them to instead refer people to the HHWF. "You never know what you'll get in", she continued, "I've seen it all. Sometimes you get some dangerous stuff... even body parts".

Thibodeau also explained the Unwanted Medication Disposal Program, intended to keep pharmaceutical drugs from entering the water supply. Household medications should not be flushed down the toilet or sink, as wastewater treatment plants cannot properly neutralize or remove the chemicals involved. Residents are encouraged to drop off their unwanted medication at the Chisago County Sheriff's office or the North Branch police department. However, hypodermic needles and other sharps should be disposed of at the HHWF in North Branch.

If residents see a garbage truck with debris or trash being blown or shaken out of it, they are asked to report it (257-4100) with the name of the truck's company and the time and place the incident occurred.
