50th Anniversary celebration; Land Use training offered
BY NANCY KRAMER Correspondent
A break on the city's insurance premium was the incentive to encourage Chisago City staff, Council and Planning Commission members to attend a Land Use Training seminar being offered by the League of Minnesota Cities.
Planning Commission member Angela Weidell-LaBathe and Associate Planner Courtney Wiekert attended the training in October and highly recommended that staff also attend a future session.
City Administrator John Pechman told the council that the instructor would be willing to come to Chisago City to conduct the in-service. The 90 minute session would contain legal information relating to land use issues. A team of land use attorneys could act as a resource to both elected and appointed city officials.
The East Central Regional Library will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary through the month of November. The kick-off will be held on Thursday, Nov. 5 from 2-6 p.m. at the ECRL headquarters on Birch Street in Cambridge. The Chisago Lakes branch of the library system will hold its celebration on Thursday, Nov. 12 from 6-8 p.m.
The East Central Regional Library was established in 1959 and included Isanti, Mille Lacs and Pine counties. ECRL was the second multi-county library system in Minnesota.
Aitkin County joined the library system in 1964, followed by Kanabec in 1967 and Chisago County in 1970.
ECRL now consists of 14 branches, including Hinkley, McGregor, Milaca, Mille Lacs Lake (Isle), Mora, North Branch, Pine City, Princeton, Rush City Sandstone and Wyoming.
Mayor Taylor made the motion that Chisago City will proclaim the anniversary, and requested that all residents join in celebrating ECRL's 50th anniversary by visiting one or more branches of the library system.
The motion carried unanimously.
City Council members were very pleased to hear that the Raspberry Hill Development project on County 19 will be completed $37,000 less than engineer estimations.
Administrator Pechman told the council that Peterson Companies was the lowest bidder of six companies, for the completion of the water main and trail portions of the project.
The Park Board has future visions of a play field installed within Raspberry Hill. The play field would help to accommodate the overwhelming demand for fields to be used for soccer, football and baseball. A swing set and a few additional toys could also be added. The play field is a good choice in the development because excess dirt is available for a division berm to be built behind a row of houses, as well as to be used as soil for the field. The city would otherwise need to pay to have the dirt removed. The berm could also be used as a sledding hill.
The Chisago Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce donated the proceeds from their annual golf tournament to Chisago City for the Ojiketa Regional Park. The donation amounted to $1,000.
The council was very grateful to accept the generous donation.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Chisago City Council will be Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall on Railroad Avenue. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend and participate.
