A 58-year-old Cambridge man has been charged in connection with the Peoples National Bank hold-up last week. Rick Steven Wallat, 58, Cambridge was charged in federal court and released on personal recognizance, as an unlikely flight risk and because the bank robbery did not involve a weapon. No trial date is set yet.
Employees of the North Branch bank told investigators the robber entered the bank October 5 in sunglasses and a hooded jacket and gave a teller a note demanding cash. He fled in a green-colored small passenger car, heading south on I-35, out of North Branch. Agencies were alerted immediately.
Wallat was apprehended not long after the 11 a.m. hold-up as he exited the freeway, and headed west on County Road 17 into Isanti County. Authorities said a hand-written note reading "robbery gun" was discovered, along with $8,850 in currency and other items of evidence.
